Scope and Contents
The Urban Construction Laboratory (UCL) was a research group affiliated with the Center for Environmental Research at CED. UCL studied issues of urban construction and development, and played an important advisory role in numerous urban and regional design and planning projects across North American and Asia. UCL received sponsorship from numerous organizations, including the Rose Foundation and the GC-5 companies (the largest 5 architecture-engineering-construction firms in Japan – Shimizu, Kajima, Obayashi, Taisei and Takenaka). Bender served as director of UCL starting in 1990. Around 2005 the organization name changed to Urban Design Laboratory (UDL). Writings include copies of the UCL Newsletter (1990-2004), published papers, and presentation papers. Projects include papers and reports on research projects conducted by UCL for GC-5 companies in Japan.
