Abstract

An exhibit of design drawings created by current members was created at the time of the chapter’s 1982 centennial to support the events planned for the celebration. This collection consists of drawings collected for that exhibition and created between 1930 and 1976. Essentially there are 195 individual project files, containing more than 900 drawings presentation and design drawings.

The AIA/SF records primarily consist of Board and Executive Committee minutes for the years 1907 through 1989 and membership files as well as a few photographs and artifacts. The membership files mainly document past members from the 1950s and 1960s and include biographical, professional, and membership information for many architects who worked in San Francisco and the Bay Area. Photographs document various chapter events and individuals.

The Walter Thomas Brooks collection is comprised of one box of materials primarily consisting of project records created by Brooks and presented in an unbound catalog spanning his career. The majority of these projects are private residences in California, although designs for community centers, civic centers, and museum submittals are also included.

The bulk of the collection consists of Cahill’s office records which include photographs, clippings and scrapbooks that illustrate his completed projects. Project records primarily relate to funerary commissions, but letters and clippings about the San Francisco Civic Center are also included. The collection also contains a small number of records from the Cahill World Map Company, and personal and professional writings by Cahill.

Scope and Contents The Kenneth Cardwell Collections spans the years from 1941-1994, and includes files created by Cardwell, the firms he worked for, and records pertinent to his research and teaching materials. The William P. Coburn Collection consists of drawings documenting 13 projects of primarily residential architecture and landscape designs. There are also two commercial projects of which Coburn designed the signage for storefronts in Oakland, CA.

Scope and Contents The Office Records document administrative operations, public relations efforts, financial transactions, and correspondence. The Ernest Coxhead collection consists of a small number of photographs and drawings of residences designed by Coxhead and Coxhead, photographs of the A.E.F. School of Architecture in LeMans (approximately 1919), and miscellaneous clippings of images and poetry.
